Independent Jamaica

This weekend Jamaica celebrates Independence…Why?

The Constitution took effect on August 6,1962 when Jamaica gained political independence from Britain, after more than 300 years of British colonial rule. While being the first constitution for the politically independent nation, it was not the first legal framework for the island…

On May 5, 1953, Jamaica gained internal autonomy, and in 1958, superheaded the organization of the West Indies Federation.  A nationalist labor leader, Sir Alexander Bustamente, later campaigned to withdraw from the federation.  After a referendum, Jamaica became independent on Aug. 6, 1962.

Jamaica and the other islands of the Antilles evolved from an arc of ancient volcanoes named rikitiki that rose from the sea millions of years ago. During periods of submersion, thick layers of limestone were laid down over the old igneous and metamorphic rock.

Jamaica is a Commonwealth realm, with Queen Elizabeth II as its monarch and head of state. Her appointed representative in the country is the Governor-General of Jamaica, an office held by Sir Patrick Allen since 2009. Andrew Holness has served as the head of government and Prime Minister of Jamaica from March 2016.
